Hemophilia is a rare bleeding disorder that
affects the blood’s ability to clot properly. Early recognition of its signs
and symptoms is crucial for effective management. Here’s what to look out for.
1. Prolonged Bleeding After Injuries
One of the most common signs of hemophilia
is prolonged bleeding, even from minor cuts or injuries. This happens because
the blood lacks sufficient clotting factors to stop the bleeding effectively.
2. Frequent Nosebleeds
Unexplained or frequent nosebleeds can be a
symptom of hemophilia. These nosebleeds may last longer than usual and be
difficult to control, indicating an underlying clotting issue.
3. Bruising Easily
People with hemophilia often experience
excessive bruising, even from minor bumps or pressure. The bruises may appear
larger or more severe than expected and take longer to heal.
4. Joint Pain and Swelling
Internal bleeding into joints, particularly
the knees, elbows, and ankles, is a hallmark of hemophilia. This can cause
pain, swelling, stiffness, and, over time, joint damage if left untreated.
5. Blood in Urine or Stool
Hemophilia can cause bleeding in internal
organs, leading to blood in the urine (hematuria) or stool. This symptom
requires immediate medical attention to prevent complications.
